The network now has a total of 94 villages that have passed the heritage, protection, conservation and cultural requirements
The Association of ‘The Most Beautiful Villages in Spain‘ (Los Pueblos Mas Bonitos de España), whose objective is to promote the small villages of its network, preferably rural and group them under the quality associated with this initiative, has started the year 2020 with fifteen new incorporations. The new incorporations were announced during the National Assembly of the Association held in the Puebla de Sanabria (Zamora) at the end of November and which has come into effect with the new year.
These fifteen villages had to pass over 40 different evaluation criteria in order to be able to be classified as part of the network, the criteria includes aspects such as looking after the patrimony, the harmony of the village, the level of cleanliness, the conservation of the facades, the level of traffic, care and conservation of gardens and green areas, programmed cultural activities and the conservation of traditions, among many others.
The villages that aspire to be part of the network must have a population of less than 15, 000 inhabitants and have a certified architectural or natural heritage. Once the application has been submitted, the association carries out a rigorous evaluation of the site until a final decision is made.
In the words of Francisco Mestre, the association’s president, these fifteen villages have managed to become part of this network after having “passed a rigorous audit thanks to the work of generations of residents who have taken care of and protected the cultural, architectural and natural heritage”.
‘The Most Beautiful Villages in Spain’ is an initiative that was created in 2011 based on the French model Les Plus Beux Villages of France, which in less than a decade has become a benchmark of prestige and quality both nationally and internationally. The Spanish network currently chairs the ‘Federation of the Most Beautiful Villages in the World’, formed by the associations of France, Italy, Belgium and Japan.
