Spain has been chosen over France, Switzerland, Canada, the USA and the Caribbean by foreigners who are planning to settle outside their home country when the pandemic ends, according to a survey of 44 countries

Despite the difficulties caused by the Covid-19 crisis, foreigners still consider Spain one of their favourite destinations. They not only think that is it a great country to travel around and enjoy their holidays but also a country where they would like to settle. That is, once the worst of the pandemic is over.

Specifically, Spain is the second favourite destination for those who are considering the possibility of settling outside their country of origin after the health crisis. This  was reflected by 17% of those surveyed in 44 countries by the consultancy firm ‘Knight Frank’, one of the global leaders in the real estate market. It is only surpassed by the United Kingdom, with 30%, in a ranking where our country is at a significant distance from France (9%), Switzerland (4%), Canada (4%), USA (4%), Caribbean (4%), Australia (4%) and Portugal (2%), among others. Quality of life, a good health system, education, a stable economy and government and easy access to these destinations, are the main reasons why these countries are among the favourites.

According to the study, 25% of those surveyed consider changing their residence next year, of which 4 out of 10 would stay in the same city; 26% would change city, but within the same country; and 34% would consider going abroad – which, in the total of those surveyed, is 9%.

Among the main reasons for this change of residence, in this order, is the possibility of improving the current family residence, the possibility of having better access to quality medical attention and the option of purchasing a holiday home in a sunny destination, followed by commercial and employment reasons.

According to the real estate consultant, during the pandemic and the months of confinement people were given considerable time to reflect on the way they live, their homes and the use space. A lot of people came to the conclusion that they needed to improve or change their living conditions. Especially if, according to the survey, about two thirds believe that the possibility of working remotely will be much greater than it was before the Covid-19 pandemic. For this reason, the main demands and requirements of those surveyed in this study are more space in general, to be able to install home offices for example and locations on the coast.
